What Makes Being a Young Mom So Difficult

I love being a young mother and now that I have Keolanui in my life, I can’t imagine what it would be like without him. But truthfully, being a young mother is the hardest thing I’ve had to deal with so far in life. For those of you who are expecting young moms, or those of you who are just here out of curiosity, hopefully, this will give you an inside look as to what makes being a young mom so difficult.

Putting your career on hold

Depending on your situation, often times having a baby means putting your career on hold.  When I was pregnant with Keolanui, I was only 17 years old.  I was preparing to attend college that coming fall to get my degree in horse training and management.  When I found out I was pregnant, I knew horse training was something that I would have to put on hold, due to the dangers of working with unpredictable animals. Now that Keolanui has arrived and I am searching for a job, I am at a loss as to where to apply.  I know I don’t want to work at department stores my whole life, but finding a lifelong career, often means college, and that’s something I do not have the time or money for.

Financial instability

One of the worst feelings is to feel as if you cannot provide for your child.  Being a young mom means you probably don’t have a set career path or a high paying job.  Often times this means living paycheck to paycheck, which is not ideal.  Children are so expensive and being a young adult, who hasn’t established themselves, means you have to work a thousand times harder than others your age because you have a baby to take care of.  Oh and say goodbye to savings, everytime you save money for a rainy day, you’re child will go thru a growth spurt and will be in need of new clothes/gear.

People respond in a negative way

A lot of people in today’s society have a hard time welcoming a young mother.  After a while, you just get used to all of the rude comments and dirty looks.  Your relationship with others will change drastically, people you thought were your friends turn on you, you aren’t viewed the same way, and will forever be, the girl who got pregnant at a young age.

No time to yourself

Every highschooler’s dream is to leave their parents house and enjoy their newly found freedom.  However, when you become pregnant right out of high school, that freedom is extremely limited.  You have a baby who needs 24/7 attention, bills to pay, and a house to take care of.  Hopefully, your baby likes naps, because that will be the only time you get to yourself.

Being a young mom has it’s ups and downs.  While it is one of the most challenging tasks in life, it is also the most rewarding.  Whatever your situation is, keep your head high and stay strong for your family, you will get thru this tough time.  Hold your baby and cherish this time with them, their baby days go by way too fast.

What I have found is it depends on where you live. Some neighborhoods have older moms and when you are the young mom, I think they do look at you like you are naive. But at the same time if you live in a neighborhood where the moms are young, and you are the older mom, then they look at you like you are too old to be a mom. The trick is to find a great group of women, no matter what age, and you can work through all of the struggles together.
